Significant Online Outage Affects Many Sites and Applications

A large-scale internet outage has affected dozens websites and applications globally, as users experiencing issues getting online after problems at the cloud computing platform.

The affected services include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned services like its primary shopping platform and the Ring home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected in addition to its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and additional accounts of difficulties accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring customers turned to networks to state their doorbells were not working.

Just within Britain, notifications of disruptions on specific platforms reached the many thousands for every service.

Amazon reported that the outage originated in the eastern region of the US at AWS, a unit that supplies essential online infrastructure for a host of businesses, who lease space on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the America (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “elevated problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The widespread consequence appeared to hit apps around the world, with the outage tracking website showing problems with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, further indicated a increase in outages on Monday morning, with many of them found in the state of Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the problems originated.
