Qarabag Makes A Historic Moment with Sensational Win Against Benfica

Qarabag players celebrating historic win

A club from Azerbaijan had never won in the UEFA’s elite competition prior to Qarabag's memorable result against Benfica.

Qarabag delivered a remarkable fightback at Benfica to make a historic moment and become the very first Azerbaijani team to win a UEFA Champions League main draw match.

Having qualified for the elite European stage for the initial occasion in eight years, the team managed by Gurbanov found themselves trailing by a two-goal disadvantage after just 16 minutes after goals from Enzo Barrenechea and Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Azerbaijan champions halved the gap on the first half’s midway point through a superb Andrade finish before fellow player Kady Borges struck the base of the post.

Just moments after the break, Gurbanov's side silenced the home stadium with the equalizing goal. Marko Jankovic's defence-splitting pass found Duran and he skillfully found the opposite corner on his maiden European outing.

Substitute Kashchuk got the memorable decisive strike late from time, collecting the ball up with his back facing the net before finishing expertly on the turn.

The team and coaching staff fell to the ground in jubilation at the conclusion after a win that will be recorded in Champions League history, with their earlier attempt finishing with a pair of ties and four losses.

Coming up for Gurbanov and his team is a fixture at their own stadium with FC Copenhagen, while the Portuguese outfit travel to the London club.
