Labuschagne Omitted from Australian ODI Team to Face India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series against India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock selection.
Performance Issues Result in Omission
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international team following being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
Labuschagne has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Team Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury by the time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
