Heroic Train Employee Suffers Critical Injuries Amid Multiple Knife Attack on High-Speed Service

A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has sustained critical wounds, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Event

Surveillance footage allegedly shows the employee attempting to halt the attacker as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied passengers fleeing through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for interrogation. Authorities declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from medical care.

A witness recorded the individual waving a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This terrible incident has affected many people. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the courageous member of rail staff whose family are being assisted by specialist personnel,” said a senior police official.

Labor Reaction and Calls for Action

Train associations were swift to commend employees and call for increased action. A union official stated he would be “seeking immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest available assistance, tools and robust protocols in place”.

A different union leader urged the train operator and authorities “to act quickly to examine security, to support the affected employees, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Driver Commended for Rapid Thinking

The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not halt the train in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” explained a association representative.

Additional Information

Authorities said they got the first emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One observer recounted initially thinking if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from individuals' faces that it was real.

Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any further details.

Rail operations on the impacted route are anticipated to experience delays until the following day, with travelers recommended to postpone their travel where feasible.

Individuals with information that could assist the inquiry are asked to reach authorities by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
